The testers at Consumer Digest magazine think the GMC Acadia is pretty darn close to a perfect family vehicle, naming it a “Best Buy.” Maybe it’s the way the Acadia shatters the compromises of yesterday’s family vehicles. With the GMC Acadia, you can have maximum room without paying maximum fuel bills. And, you can have agility – something never found in old-fashioned family trucksters.
At first glance, the GMC Acadia appears to be a full-size SUV, but it’s really a sleek, sophisticated crossover. Because it’s not shaped like a barn, it doesn't push as much wind as a box on wheels. That translates into a quieter interior and better fuel economy.
Fuel economy is a great place to start a discussion about the Acadia because that’s one of its standout features. But you can’t mention its 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway economy figures without also providing some context. That context comes from the Acadia’s interior roominess. The second-row seats slide four inches forward and back. They also provide easy access to the third-row seats where there’s room for adults. The Acadia is ready with tremendous cargo capacity – 68.9 cubic feet behind the second-row seats. Or, fold down the second row and remove the third, and open the Acadia cargo area up to 116.9 cubic feet. A Ford Flex, by comparison, offers just 43.2 and 83.2 cubic feet, respectively, in those positions.
The real joy of the Acadia comes through when you take the wheel. Remember to keep all that roominess and fuel economy in your mind when you experience the performance. The 2010 GMC Acadia merges onto freeways with amazing ease, able to zip from zero-to-60 mph in about eight seconds, according to published road tests. That’s thanks to specs that seem more like those of a premium sport sedan than a three-row crossover: the 3.6-liter, double overhead-cam V6 with direct fuel injection produces 288 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque. The power is smoothly and quietly channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission and your choice of front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive.
There’s enough go-power to pull a trailer weighing up to 5,200 pounds. That’s more than ample capacity to haul a pair of sporty watercraft – or a trailer full of your in-laws’ stuff, if you’re feeling particularly magnanimous. Keep in mind, too, that GMC backs up the engine and transmission with a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
All of this capability starts at an MSRP of just $31,740. That includes a plethora of standard features in the SL model such as front and rear air conditioning, StabiliTrak stability control with traction control, frontal and side-impact airbags for the driver and front passenger and head-curtain side-impact airbags for all three rows in outboard seating positions.

Standard onboard entertainment starts with an AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible CD player plus XM Satellite Radio. For convenience and security, Acadia comes standard with a theft-deterrent system featuring PASS-Key III, an engine immobilizer and remote keyless entry.
From there, you can treat yourself to a full array of optional amenities. Don’t need seating for eight? Choose the second-row captains’ chairs and still have room for seven. Trim lines include SLE, SLT1 and SLT2, each layering on more comforts.
